Funding
We are developing funding opportunities to support collaboration, skills development and engagement in gut-immune-brain axis research across Africa. We plan to offer mobility awards, engagement and communication awards, and flexible funds.
There are currently no active funding calls.
Details of future calls, including award values, eligibility, application guidance and closing dates, will be published here when available.
Our funders
GIBA-A is funded by Department of Science Technology Innovation and National Research Foundation.

Our home
GIBA-A is located at the NRF-DSTI Centre of Excellence in Human Development at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa.
Mobility awards
Planned support for research visits and exchanges between academic institutions and, where relevant, industry partners. These awards would help researchers and technicians start or strengthen collaborations, learn new techniques, access expertise and facilities, and develop joint funding applications. We aim to support connections within Africa and with international partners.
Engagement and communication awards
Planned support for activities that connect GIBA research with communities and other partners. These may include educational resources, public engagement events, communication of research findings and activities involving people with lived experience. The aim is to strengthen public involvement and make research more accessible through dialogue and knowledge exchange.
Flexible funds
Planned support for interdisciplinary collaborations and early-stage research aligned with our mission. These funds would help teams develop and test ideas, combine methods and generate preliminary evidence for larger applications. The emphasis would be on mechanistic understanding of the gut-immune-brain axis across the life course and approaches relevant to African populations.
Awarded projects
Projects supported through GIBA-A funding schemes will be featured here as awards are made.
